The Animal Husbandry sector plays a pivotal role in the socio-economic development of Kerala with great potential to contribute to the regional economy. As per Economic Review 2021, the share of livestock in total GSVA of the State has increased by 2.66 per cent in 2020-21. As per the 20th Livestock census, the livestock population in the state is 29.08 Lakhs and poultry population is 297.7 Lakhs. Although the production of milk, eggs and meat has increased in the last decade, Kerala is still not self-sufficient, especially considering the low in-house market availability of these items. The socio-economic changes observed in Kerala, necessitate urgent improvements in the sector to meet increasing demands. In addition, droughts and natural disasters increase the sector’s overall vulnerability.
During the 2018 floods the animal husbandry sector suffered massive damages including death of livestock’s, poultry, and destruction of livestock infrastructure. The loss in this sector accounted for nearly Rs. 172 crore. An estimated 5163 adult cattle, 5193 calves, 541 buffalo, 1228 heifers, 6380 goats, 1053 pigs, 11.43 lakh chicken and 4.64 lakh ducks, 20000 quails, and 50 rabbits were reported dead or missing.
To overcome the damage, it is important to provide quality services to poultry and livestock farmers using innovative technological interventions, ensuring the last mile delivery of services from the department, providing support for dairy farmers, and introducing disaster-resistant farming technologies.
RKI accorded Rs.163.27 Crore for six projects including livelihood support package, establishment of fodder hubs, production and sales of safe chicken and projects for delivering veterinary services at the doorstep of the farmers. Following are the key projects:
